GreatNews 1.0.389-ktm

Postby ktm » Mon Jan 24, 2011 7:56 am

Hooray, an update!

Changelog:

Code: Select all

Ver 1.0 (Build 389) released on 01/24/2011
=================================================
+ Fixed numbering error when paging through labeled items
+ Added option to mark all of a feed's items unread
+ Fixed a bug when initializing a "fresh" installation
+ Some general code cleanups
+ Reduced DB locking
+ Increased zlib compression level
+ Additional attempts at compression at various points
+ Corrected URI for Feed Validator
+ Updated SQLite to to 3.7.4
+ Removed update checks and auto updater
+ Built using the WDK to remove the statically linked C/C++ runtimes

I kinda lost track of when I touched what, so if I missed something or repeat some stuff that already made it into the previous release, sorry.

Anyways, as you can see, there's not much in the way of new features. The biggest change is the way I built the whole thing, cutting down on some more bloat by using libraries already present on every(?) Windows installation, instead of including that (redundant) code in GreatNews.exe. Should you run into any errors due to this (most likely something about "missing exports"), for the time being you can use the binaries from the "-static" archive attached below instead - But if you do, let me know so I can fix it in the next version!

(Also, if you have experience with using the WDK and can help me to get code that's using the STL70 to compile (or rather, link) without the _STATIC_CPPLIB define, get in touch and enlighten me, please!)

I just downloaded and ran .389 and an error immediately popped up. Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit if it matters.

Back to .388. :|

Great, a huge-ass error box with little text and absolutely no useful information... Gotta love Windows. And I have no 64-bit Win7 machine to reproduce this on (will have to try setting up a VM later, I guess). Damn.

Does the static build throw that error, too?

Okay, I just set up a W7U64 VM and tried the exact build of GN posted above - worked perfectly for me (apart from the fact that the window didn't look very Aero-ish and out-of-place). I'll let it download all of its system updates once I get access to proper internet again and see if that changes anything, but I kinda doubt it. Anyone else get the same error as twayney?

Edit: Tried again with all the latest updates installed, and as expected it still works. So the problem seems to be on your end. Why .388 works while .389 doesn't I have no clue though...

Well, at least this gave me the chance to add the proper manifest settings to enable Vista/Seven skinning. It's fitting in much better now!

Great to see a GreatNews update, I love this program! :)
Works on my Windows 7 (64 bit) machine, by the way.

Problem: I cannot create feed groups anymore. After entering
the group name and hitting OK, I get the following message:

ERROR[1]: near")": syntax error

... and, of course, no new group is created. Any suggestions?

Well, I guess it is some kind of ghost town, given that it took 76 days to get the post approved.
And I've given up on Great News in that time, as the problem didn't fix itself.
Will the next release fix it?

Yep, can't create groups with this one neither.

Sorry for the delay in approving your posts guys. Both myself and Jack have been excessively busy over the past few months.

So each and every post in here needs to be approved manually, huh? That would explain why it feels so dead in here most of the time...

Anyways, about the group creation issue... I'll look into it, and you probably won't even have to wait long since I was thinking about prepping a new release soon anyways, since I've done a bunch of under-the-hood changes to prepare for an eventual 64-bit build. Just have to squash one last issue (well, now it's two I guess).
