Channel tagging

Postby gtanuel » Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:46 pm

I'm not sure if this has been asked before: do you plan to implement channel tagging?

I read the thread about nested channel groups and roughly understand your intention to 'break' the conventional hierarchical structure way in navigation. Imho, one of the neatest implementations would be channel tagging.

A bit different from what mojo_lo had suggested:
mojo_lo wrote:what about doing away with groups completely, and only having labels/watches? but, giving users the option to automatically label all new stories from a particular channel. eg, all fresh off the press stories from gizmodo can be automatically be labelled "tech".

I personally would like to separate the channel and item/story tagging in separate 'root nodes', e.g:

Code: Select all

+All News Channels
  +Hierachical Folder 1
    +Hierarchical Folder 1.1
      Channel 1
      Channel 2
    +Hierarchical Folder 1.2
...
+All News Watches
+All Story Labels
  +Story Label 1
    Story/item from Channel 1
    Story/item from Channel 2
  +Story Label 2
    Story/item from Channel 2
    Story/item from Channel 3
+All Channels Labels
  +Channel Label 1
    Channel 1
    Channel 2
  +Channel Label 2
    Channel 2
    Channel 3
...

Having this in place, I would agree to mojo_lo about doing away with groups completely, e.g.:

Code: Select all

+All News Channels
  Channel 1
  Channel 2
  Channel 3
...
+All Channels Labels
  +Channel Label 1
    Channel 1
    Channel 2
  +Channel Label 2
    Channel 2
    Channel 3
...

One 'real life' example:

Code: Select all

+All News Channels
  BoingBoing
  Dilbert
  Engadget
  Slashdot
  Slashdot: Games
  Slashdot: Developer
...
+All Channels Labels
  +(unlabeled)
    BoingBoing
  +Comic
    Dilbert
  +Gadget
    Engadget
  +Geek
    Dilbert
    Engadget
    Slashdot
  +Slashdot
    Slashdot
    Slashdot: Games
    Slashdot: Developer
...

Nowadays my feed channels organization are getting more and more insensible. E.g. this great guy blogs much about programming and cooking quite evenly. Being reluctant to put it under "Programming" or "Cooking", I ended up dump it in "Personal" group which currently has >30 blogs of various focuses in there. Basically, I've been dreaming for channel-tagging since day-0 :D

Of course tagging vs ontology has always been debated. I personally think GreatNews should (still) support hierarchical structure in its fullness, simply because RSS can't really be separated from OPML -> outline.

I do intent to implement channel tagging w/o grouping. It almost exactly like your last example. A lot of feed already supply category attributes. GreatNew will use them as channel tags directly. There are still some issues I need to figure out, like if I let user define channel tags by himself, what to do if a channel changed its category, etc.

Ahem... I'm reviving quite an old thread. Just want to check if there's some movement in this request :D

It apparently hasn't. I almost want to create my own aggregator but immediately realize that although seems trivial it really isn't - not even mentioning about how lousy I will be in handling support request compared to your excellent one. So, during the past year, I looked around trying to find one with feed/channel tagging. Alas, those that does seems to be only the web based ones.

So, are you still considering to implement this feature (hopefully soon :))? If you are, I think it would be the first desktop aggregator doing this. Really. C'mon, I beg you 8)

Regarding whether it should be user or publisher who decides about the tag, I will definitely suggest: user. Beside technically easier (it seems to), it's not too far from the traditional grouping we currently have. After all, we (users) are the one who defines the grouping. I'm thinking along the line with what del.icio.us does. It doesn't need to be a cloud, though, normal list will do.
