Hi Jack,

Sorry to bring this up again: have you had a chance to look into the database access slowdowns I've been experiencing for the past few builds?

Well, at least for me, GN has become unbearable slow when updating and accessing its SQL database. There used to be some great improvement (in this build and a few subsequent builds), but that has not been the case for the past few updates.

Best,
Alex

Alex, I have a rough idea where's the problem. Can you send me your greatnews.ini file so I can check the configuration? Thanks, Jack

Same slowness

Postby codelust » Wed Mar 08, 2006 5:07 am

I've had the same problem with GreatNews slowing down to the point of being unusable. It drove me so mad that I even went and installed Sage back on FF.

Still, as a last recourse, I decided to try and have a last shot at doing an extensive clean up.

Settings I chose were

* Clean up news older than 1 week [ticked]
* Include unread news [ticked]
* Include labelled news [ticked]
* Compress data file after clean up [ticked]
* Delete GreatNews temp files [ticked]

* Keep only the most recent 30 news items per channel

It took a bit of time to go through my 320+ feeds and I am left with 3666 unread items now. I don't remember what the unread count was earlier, but it was considerably higher, but the best part is that it is back to being snappy as it used to be and it does not take down task bar with it when it freezes up. Yay!

Have you hit some undocumented upper limit with SQLite?

We will never hit sqlite storage limit, which is at terabytes level. :)

There are some issues with how to use sqlite indexes in multi-thread environment. The new sqlite engine seems behave a little bit differently from the older ones. But I should be able to work around it quite easily. There are some indicators that news list sorting causes performance problem.

Hi,

How do you turn off column sorting? My Greatnews is also getting unbearably slow when switching from 1 group to the next. Explorer freezes and hard disk LED lights up for 30secs to 1min when switching feeds. I suspect it might be due the the large newsfeed.db (158MB currently) as well. I am hoping to be able to improve the performance without clearing my old feeds if possible. (Yes I like to keep the old feeds so I don't run cleanup).
Thanks for any advice given.

If you click at the same column head, it will cycle through Sort Up, Sort Down, and No Sort.

I will probably do some performance tuning this month to address issues with newsfeed.db > 100M.
