How to upgrade GreatNews

  1. If you use GreatNewsSetup.exe before, please download the newer GreatNewsSetup.exe and run the setup.
  2. If you use GreatNews.zip before, please download the newer GreatNews.zip and unzip to your existing greatnews directory, overwrite existing files when prompted to.

Both GreatNewsSetup.exe and GreatNews.zip will keep your subscriptions, and will upgrade them to new data formats automatically if necessary.

    New install or upgrade?

Yesterday I got a chance to check last week’s server log: 10K+ downloads in a week because of the new public beta. Not bad for a tiny rss reader in a crowded market, especially considering I hasn’t published it on any download sites like C…

This ‘How to upgrade’ doesn’t tell me how to update GreatNews on my pen drive… Is there a separate stand-alone version? BTW: I did try to update – after a backup :-)

    Zip upgrading problem:
I download and extract .zip.376 and overwrite the old folder, then open greatnews, but it still prompts upgrading message for new version. any solution? thanks.

  9. Jack Says:

J, just unzip to your pen drive.

solidery, If you check the Help->About dialog, what version number is there?

It’s popular *because* its tiny. I was using RSS Bandit, which is very good, but is a resource hog. Great News much more lightweight. That is your niche. If this app becomes bloated you’ll probably lose a lot of people. You have very good functionality here.

Wow, I love this news reader. I love that I can use it as a portable app as well. I was very happy to see a new version. Keep at it. This is up there with Password Safe as the two must haves on my thumbdrive.

I keep trying different readers, but timidly return to GreatNewsReader! Opening links in a new Tab is what sets it apart. This makes me use it for regular browsing as well! But not sure if because I still use IE6, there is a continuous Script error during certian links (wired.com for e.g.) which doesn’t come up if opened directly in the browser. Improvement/add-on suggested: The paste & Go in adress bar similar to Opera, which saves a key press or a click.
